Taking suo-moto cognizance of the recent tragic road accident in Patiala, the Punjab State Child Rights Protection Commission has summoned detailed reports from the Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police, Patiala.
Commission Chairperson Kanwarjit Singh stated that the Commission intervened following a fatal collision between a school vehicle and a tipper truck, which claimed the lives of seven students and a driver, leaving several others injured.
In a letter to the Deputy Commissioner, the Commission has directed immediate and comprehensive medical treatment for the injured children. It has also instructed the Regional Transport Officer (RTO) to conduct strict inspections of overloaded tippers and other heavy vehicles operating in the district.
Additionally, the Commission has mandated a thorough inspection of the affected school’s vehicles, as well as those of all schools across Patiala district. Strict action has been advised against schools and drivers if vehicles are found in violation of prescribed safety norms.
The SSP Patiala has been asked to investigate all aspects related to the tipper truck involved in the accident—including the driver’s license, vehicle documents such as registration certificate and fitness certificate, and whether the vehicle adhered to mining policy regulations and load restrictions.
Both the Deputy Commissioner and SSP have been asked to submit their action-taken reports to the Commission by May 11, 2025.
