Chandigarh HC Orders ₹1 Crore, ₹50 Lakh Compensation in Carmel Convent Tragedy; Slams Administration for Laxity
Chandigarh, September 30, 2025: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the Chandigarh Administration to pay ₹1 crore to the family of the deceased student and ₹50 lakh to the family of the seriously injured student of Carmel Convent School, Sector 9-D, Chandigarh, in connection with the 2022 tree-fall tragedy. The court also criticized the administration for its lax approach in the matter.
The Tragedy
On July 8, 2022, a large tree collapsed on students of Carmel Convent School while they were having their mid-day meal.

One girl died in the incident.

Another sustained serious injuries, while several others were also hurt.
Committee Findings & Recommendations

An enquiry headed by Justice (Retd.) Jitendra Chauhan held the Engineering Department of Chandigarh responsible.

It recommended compensation of ₹1 crore for the deceased student’s family and ₹50 lakh for the injured student’s family.

Although the Chandigarh Administration accepted the committee’s findings, it refused to pay compensation as recommended.
Court Proceedings
Represented by High Court Advocate Ramdeep Pratap Singh along with Advocate Sahil Koul, the victims’ families approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
After hearing the arguments, Justice Kuldeep Tiwari ordered:

Chandigarh Administration to pay compensation in line with the enquiry committee’s recommendations, in addition to any earlier payouts.

Carmel Convent School authorities to waive off the fees of the injured child until she completes her senior secondary education.

Pulled up the administration for showing insensitivity and delay in addressing the matter.
