New Delhi, October 31, 2025: India today observed Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India, who played a pivotal role in uniting more than 560 princely states into one nation after independence.
Introduced by the Government of India in 2014, Rashtriya Ekta Diwas serves as a reminder of Patel’s immense contribution to national integration and his vision of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat” (One India, Great India). The day highlights the importance of unity, integrity, and collective strength in building a strong and inclusive India.
Across the country, citizens participated in events such as the Run for Unity, pledge-taking ceremonies, exhibitions, and cultural programs organized in schools, colleges, and government institutions. The main event was held at the Statue of Unity in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, the world’s tallest statue built in honour of Sardar Patel, where leaders and dignitaries paid floral tributes.
When India attained freedom in 1947, Patel faced the monumental challenge of integrating over 560 princely states, each with its own ruler and governance. Through his exceptional diplomacy, foresight, and determination, he ensured the peaceful accession of key regions, including Hyderabad, Junagadh, and Jammu & Kashmir, laying the groundwork for a united India.
Remembering Patel’s legacy, Prime Minister and other leaders urged citizens to uphold the values of unity and inclusiveness. Patel had once remarked, “Manpower without unity is not a strength unless it is harmonized and united properly; then it becomes a spiritual power.”
As the nation grapples with social, regional, and ideological challenges, the observance of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas stands as a reaffirmation of India’s strength in diversity. The day inspires citizens to continue working toward harmony, progress, and the vision of a united India envisioned by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
