Move to float new Akali Dal gains momentum; Delegation reaches Delhi for party registration

New Delhi, January 7, 2026: Preparations to form a new Akali Dal in Punjab have gathered pace, with a party delegation reaching New Delhi on Wednesday to submit an application for registration with the Election Commission of India.
The delegation, led by Professor Prem Singh Chandu Majra, is acting on behalf of the group headed by Giani Harpreet Singh. It is scheduled to submit the application for registration of the proposed political outfit, tentatively named Pun Surjit Shiromani Akali Dal, to the Election Commission.
Senior leaders Parminder Singh Dhinsa and Gagandeep Singh Barnala are also part of the delegation.
Speaking to Babushahi, Professor Chandu Majra said that the party will seek registration as a regional political party. He added that the first preference for the party’s name is Shiromani Akali Dal Punjab. Two alternative names have also been proposed, including Shiromani Akali Dal Sarb Hind, in case the preferred name is not approved.
