Chandigarh, February 18, 2026: AS Chatta, retired IAS officer and former Chief Secretary of Punjab, made significant disclosures regarding the absence of a government inquiry into the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.
In an exclusive conversation with Baljit Balli, Senior Journalist and Editor of Babushahi Network, Chatta revealed that despite the gravity of the incident, no separate government inquiry was instituted to fix administrative or political responsibility.
“I had retired by that time. I believed it was a fit case for a government inquiry. Some people also felt that such a serious incident required an inquiry and responsibility should have been fixed. However, the senior officers at that time were not in favour of any government inquiry,” Chatta disclosed.
Beant Singh was assassinated on August 31, 1995, in a powerful suicide bomb blast outside the Punjab Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh. The attack, carried out during a period when Punjab was emerging from years of militancy, shook the state and the nation. Beant Singh was widely credited with playing a key role in restoring normalcy in Punjab during the turbulent 1990s.
During the interview, the former Punjab Chief Secretary also made several revelations concerning the circumstances surrounding the assassination and administrative functioning during that period.
