CAG reports expose Punjab’s fiscal crisis, undermine AAP Govt’s achievements claims: Bikram Majithia

Chandigarh, March 17, 2026: Senior Bikram Singh Majithia on Tuesday slammed the AAP government, claiming that the latest Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports have “punctured the so-called achievement balloon” presented by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in his four-year performance review.
Majithia alleged that the reports reveal a deep governance and fiscal crisis in Punjab, contradicting the government’s narrative of progress. “While Bhagwant Mann showcased achievements, the CAG has laid bare the reality—Punjab’s fiscal health is close to zero,” he said.
According to the audit, the state is grappling with rising debt, widening fiscal deficits, shrinking development expenditure, and increasing reliance on loans to meet routine spending.
Majithia pointed out that committed liabilities such as salaries, pensions, subsidies, and interest payments are consuming a large share of revenue, leaving little room for capital expenditure and growth-oriented investment.
He further highlighted inefficiencies in fund utilisation, irregularities in financial management, mounting losses in public sector undertakings, particularly in the power sector, and gaps in urban governance.
“The gap between government claims and ground realities is now officially recorded in audit reports,” Majithia said.
Accusing the AAP leadership of focusing on “optics and publicity” rather than structural reforms, Majithia warned that continued fiscal mismanagement and dependence on borrowings could push Punjab into a deeper economic crisis.
He called on the government to present a clear and honest picture of the state’s finances and take immediate corrective action.
