Chandigarh, April 29, 2026: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is set to meet the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, on May 5, with key political and electoral reform issues on the agenda.
According to sources, the Chief Minister will raise concerns over Rajya Sabha members who have switched parties after being elected, calling it a breach of public trust. He is expected to demand stricter laws, including cancellation of membership for such defecting MPs.
The meeting, scheduled for 12 noon at Rashtrapati Bhavan, will also prominently feature Mann’s push for the “Right to Recall.”
He is likely to propose that voters should have the legal authority to remove elected representatives—MPs or MLAs—if they defect after elections or fail to meet public expectations.
The issue has gained traction amid recent political developments involving multiple defections by Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MPs, which have stirred political debate in Punjab.
Observers believe Mann’s move could trigger a broader national conversation on electoral reforms and measures to curb practices like alleged “Operation Lotus”-style political manoeuvring.
