Is Aadhaar valid proof for date of birth? UIDAI clarifies

New Delhi, April 29, 2026: The Unique Identification Authority of India has clarified that while Aadhaar is widely accepted as a proof of identity, it cannot be treated as a valid document to establish a person’s date of birth.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the authority explained that Aadhaar is primarily meant to verify identity when used with authentication, but it does not independently serve as proof of date of birth.
The UIDAI further noted in its clarification that the Aadhaar Act, 2016 does not explicitly recognise Aadhaar as a document for confirming date of birth.
As a result, individuals may be required to provide additional supporting documents—such as birth certificates or school records—in case of any dispute regarding their recorded date of birth.
