Hanoi/Phu Quoc, July 11, 2026: At least 15 Indian tourists were killed after a speedboat carrying Indian visitors capsized off Phu Quoc Island in southern Vietnam on Saturday, in one of the deadliest maritime accidents involving Indian tourists abroad in recent years. Authorities rescued 21 people, while an investigation into the cause of the accident has been launched.
According to Vietnamese authorities, the speedboat was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members when it overturned about 400 metres from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, a popular tourist destination near Phu Quoc. Rescue efforts were hampered by rough sea conditions, with several passengers reportedly trapped inside the overturned vessel. Nearby tourist boats rushed to assist before border guards, the navy, coast guard and other emergency agencies joined the rescue operation.
The Embassy of India in Vietnam confirmed the incident, describing it as a tragic accident and said it was working closely with Vietnamese authorities to gather details and assist the affected families. Search and rescue operations were launched immediately after the accident, while officials continued to monitor the situation.
To assist Indian nationals and their families, the Indian mission has established emergency control rooms at the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City and the Embassy of India in Hanoi.
Emergency helpline numbers:
- +84 362 817 930
- +84 915 523 714

The Indian Embassy said families seeking information or assistance could contact the control rooms for support.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the tragedy and said officials from the Indian Embassy were present at the site to assist survivors and coordinate with local authorities.
The tourists were reportedly part of an annual meeting organised by a private mobile phone company. Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the accident, and an official investigation is underway.
Phu Quoc, located in the Gulf of Thailand, is one of Vietnam’s most popular tourist destinations, known for its white-sand beaches and island-hopping excursions that attract millions of domestic and international visitors each year.
