American national held near Nepal border for attempting illegal crossing into Nepal
Maharajganj (Uttar Pradesh), July 13, 2026: An American citizen has been apprehended by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) near the India-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly attempting to cross into Nepal without valid travel documents, police said.
According to Additional Superintendent of Police (Maharajganj) Siddharth, the man, identified as Jordan Brown, claimed to be a resident of California, USA.
The official said Brown was intercepted by the SSB near Sonauli on July 11 while allegedly trying to enter Nepal without authorisation.
During questioning, Brown told authorities that he had travelled to Thailand on a tourist visa, where he lost his passport. He claimed that he later reached Sri Lanka by sea before entering India through the sea route on November 2, 2025. Since then, he had reportedly been living in Goa.
Police said no valid passport or travel documents were found in his possession at the time of his apprehension.
Authorities are currently verifying his claims. A case has been registered against him at Sonauli Police Station under Sections 21 and 23 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act for entering India without valid documents.
Further legal proceedings are underway.
