Hate Crime Allegation in Canada: Youth Arrested for Targeting Elderly Sikh Man

A wave of concern has emerged within the Sikh community in Canada following a reported hate-motivated incident in Woodstock, Ontario, where an elderly Sikh man was allegedly harassed and targeted.
According to the Woodstock Police Service, the incident occurred on April 22, 2026, at approximately 11:35 a.m. near Turtle Island School on Knights Lane. Police responded promptly after receiving reports of a disturbance in the area.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a youth allegedly carried out an unprovoked assault on the elderly individual, who was walking on a sidewalk. The accused reportedly targeted the victim based on ethnicity, while shouting racially charged remarks and obscenities. Fortunately, the victim did not sustain any physical injuries.
Following the incident, the accused fled by jumping a fence into the school premises and later exited the area. Authorities confirmed that no students were harmed during the episode.
Police have since arrested a young person in connection with the case. The accused has been charged with assault, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, and criminal harassment involving threatening conduct. The individual has been taken into custody and is awaiting a bail hearing.
Due to provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), the identity of the accused cannot be disclosed.
