Chandigarh, April 25, 2026:Hundreds of women activists from the Punjab unit of the BJP were detained by Chandigarh Police on Saturday while marching towards the residence of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, protesting the AAP’s alleged opposition to the Women’s Reservation Bill.
The protest, led by BJP Punjab Working State President Ashwani Sharma, saw participation from women across the state who demanded clarity from the Aam Aadmi Party on its stance regarding the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which proposes 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies.
Among those detained during the march were senior leaders including Parneet Kaur, BJP Mahila Morcha Punjab president Jai Inder Kaur, Mohinder Kaur Josh, Mona Jaiswal, and several other office-bearers.
Raising slogans of “Nari Shakti Zindabad,” the protesters accused the AAP and Congress of failing to support women’s political representation. Addressing the gathering, Sharma said the BJP has consistently backed women’s empowerment and alleged that opposition parties were resisting structural reforms due to political considerations.
Jai Inder Kaur termed the alleged blocking of the Bill a “black day” for democracy, claiming that women have been reduced to a vote bank rather than being given meaningful representation. Echoing similar sentiments, Parneet Kaur urged all political parties to rise above political differences and support measures aimed at empowering women.
