California (US), August 12, 2025: A shocking act of violence took place on August 4 near Lankershim Gurdwara Sahib in North Hollywood, where Harpal Singh, a 70-year-old retired mathematics professor, was brutally attacked.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m. near a local convenience store when an unidentified assailant assaulted Harpal Singh with a golf club.
The attack caused severe injuries, including trauma to his head and face. Singh has undergone multiple surgeries, including treatment for brain bleeding and damage to his eye, and remains in the Intensive Care Unit at a nearby hospital.
The American Sikh Council (ASC) has expressed deep concern over this brutal assault and extended prayers and support to Harpal Singh and his family during this difficult time.
While the motive behind the attack has not yet been officially confirmed, the ASC emphasized that such violence is unacceptable in any civil society.
Citing FBI data from 2024, the council highlighted that 142 hate crimes were reported against Sikh Americans, making them the third most targeted religious community in the United States.
ASC President Bibi Jasbir Kaur condemned the violence, stating, “Regardless of motive, this kind of attack must be strongly condemned.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Harpal Singh Ji for a swift and full recovery. We urge the Sikh community across America to remain united and vigilant. No Sikh should fear for their safety while simply walking on the street or visiting a Gurdwara Sahib.”
The council called upon local law enforcement to investigate the case thoroughly and bring the perpetrator(s) to justice. It also urged Gurdwaras nationwide to enhance community outreach and education efforts to promote understanding of Sikh identity and values.
The ASC reaffirmed its continued support for the North Hollywood Sikh community and stressed the importance of standing together against such heinous acts to ensure the safety and dignity of all Sikhs.
