PUNJAB CONGRESS TO START PARIVARTAN YATRA CHANDIGARH, September 9: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh today said there was nothing wrong in recommending a lawyer to defend the Sahajdhari and other Sikhs in the court of law. He also declared that the Punjab Congress will launch a mass campaign against corruption at the district level from September 15 onwards. Addressing a press conference along with the party incharge Mr Gulchain Singh Charak, the AICC secretary Dr Vijay Laxmi Sahu and the Congress Legislative Party leader Ms Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Capt Amarinder said, he had no idea as who had recommended Mr Harbhagwan Singh’s name to the law ministry, but even if somebody had recommended it, there was certainly nothing wrong in that. “If anybody from among the Sahajdharis would have come to me for support and assistance, I would have provided them with two lawyers instead of one as their case is genuine and justified”, Capt Amarinder asserted, while adding, however, the main issue, which is quite intriguing, is to find out as who called up Mr Harbhagwan when he was in the court and gave him certain information which turned out to be wrong. He reiterated that there was a strong probability that the Akalis were behind this controversy to bring the SGPC issue into limelight and only a high level impartial probe will expose the truth. Asserting that the Sahajdharis had every right to participate in the SGPC elections, he said, he had detailed information about the people who had been fielded by the Akali Dal in these elections but were not Gursikhs and had certain habits which were against the Sikhism. He said, he will reveal these names in due course of time along with ample proof. Spelling out the party programme, Capt Amarinder asserted that the corruption will be the main focus of the party. Citing an example he said, while the Reddy brothers in Karnataka have been arrested for their role in mining scandal, similar investigation and action was needed to be taken against Sukhbir Badal and his brother in law Bikram Majithia who had also indulged in loot of the state resources. “They have grabbed everything illegally be it sand or gravel quarrying, transport business, liquor trade, cable and even taxi operations”, he pointed out. The PCC President also announced that from the next month he along with the party incharge Mr Gulchain Singh Charak and the CLP leader will be organising a parivartan yatra in the state which will move along the national and state highways and will cover each and every constituency. This will be followed by major rallies and other programmes till the elections which will be addressed by senior party leaders from the centre. Speaking on the occasion Mr Charak disclosed that the party was perfectly geared up to form the government in the state after sweeping the elections. He said, the mood was against the Akali-BJP government which had broken all records of corruption. He pointed out, it was the Congress government in 1995 which had set up the institution of Lokpal in Punjab and the Akalis had only weakened it. Earlier Mr Charak and Capt Amarinder held the meetings of the Manifesto Committee, the Campaign Committee and the district presidents to chalk out the programme of action.
