ASI among three cops placed under suspension for manhandling photo journalist
Jalandhar, April 2 , 2019 : Deputy Commissioner of Police Gurmit Singh on Tuesday placed three cops of the Commissionerate police including an assistant sub inspector Lakhwinder Singh for manhandling a senior photo journalist of the Ajit Group of newspapers at a naka laid near the office of Jalandhar Improvement Trust this afternoon.
The DCP swung into action immediate after the journalists lay seize at the Mission chowk.
According to Manish Kumar, the cops deployed at the permanent naka laid in front of the District Public Relations Office stopped him for checking documents of his bike which were shown to them. Instead of allowing him to go, the ASI and other cops started abusing and manhandling him. One of the cops even threatened him that he would be shot if any kind of complaint is made to the higher authorities.
Manish said that he immediately informed the president of the Punjab Press Club following which journalists rushed to the site and staged a dharna in front of the DPRO office but all in vain. The journalists then moved to the Mission chowk and sat in dharna in the middle of the chowk. The Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar finding that the situation going out of control and would be deteriorated, he sent the DCP to pacify the journalists. He immediately reached the mission chowk and after talking to the journalists, he ordered the suspension of the erring all the three cops including the ASI.
The city residents have been complaining against the behavior of the cops deployed at the naka in front of the DPRO office who not only misbehaved with the vehicle riders but also harass them under the garb of checking documents of the vehicles and their physical inspection also.(agency)
