Nawanshahr, October 11, 2017 : Deputy Commissioner, Sonali Giri , today, launches unique step towards social change under the " Beti Bachao' Beti Parhao" awareness week. She greets as many as 30 mothers of newly born girls with the specially designed greeting cards alongwith sweets and other gifts. The greeting cards have the footprints of their newly born daughters as mark of the arrival of the Goddess Lakshmi, here at the Civil Hospital.
Addressing the gathering, she exhorted all sections of the society to launch concerted efforts for bringing in change in the mind set of the society towards girl child.
" Gender equality is the need of the hour and it is our moral duty to ensure equal rights to the girl child", said the DC while adding that worshiping of girls ( Kanya Pujan) was our age old legacy and it should be followed in its right perspective. This glorious tradition should not be followed merely as a ritual but to ensure proper nurturing, education and equal opportunities to the girl child to enable them to shape their destiny at their own.
The Civil surgeon, Dr. Gurinder Kaur Chawla, SMO, Dr. Harvinder SIngh, Dr. Kuldip Rai, CDPO, Savita Kumari, DCPO, Kanchan Arora, among others, also addressed the gathering.
Earlier, an Awareness Rally was taken out from the local Baradari Garden. ADC, Ranjit Kaur and Assistant Commissioner( General) Anamjyot Kaur flagged off the rally. The students holding placards having slogans regarding Beti Bachao, Beti Parhao" participated in the rally, which passed through the main roads of the town to spread the message.
