Abohar, Feb 1,2017: The police have seized 20 trucks loaded with liquor from liquor baron Shiv Lal Doda's godown located at village Ramsra of Abohar. Enquiries revealed the consignment comprised 19300 cartons of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) brands.
On a tipoff, a police party of Bahavwala police station raided the godown and seized the illicit liquor consignment. The manager of the godown and four drivers of the trucks were taken into custody and the liquor seized as they failed to show the relevant documents. A case has been registered under the relevant provisions of the Excise Act.
The police produced the accused in a local court which sent them to 2 day police reamnd.
Reacting to the seizure, Avinash Doda, brother of Shiv Lal Doda alleged the case was being made an election stunt. He claimed to have have valid documents which the police concealed. He accused Congress leader and the party's candidate from Abohar Sunil Jhakhar was behind such acts to defame his brother.
On the other hand, Jhakhar commented that Election Commission should take note of liquor's movement from Punjab to Gujarat in such large quantities that too without official documents authorising the same.
Shiv Lal Doda is lodged in Amritsar jail facing murder charge in the case of a Dalit youth's death. He was recently in news for holding a kangaroo court inside the jail premises at Fazilka and has since been transferred to Amritsar jail. He had also filed nomination as an Independent candidate from Abohar but later withdrew in support of the BJP candidate from Abohar. Before becoming an accused in the murder case, he was Akali Dal's halqa incharge. ,
