10-year jail term for rape convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim
Rohtak, August 28, 2017: Rape convict Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been sentenced 10-year jail term. The quantum of sentence was pronounced by Jagdeep Singh, the Judge of special CBI court set up on the directions of Punjab and Haryana High Court at the District Jail at Sunaria, Rohtak on Monday afternoon.
The convict Dera chief was reportedly crying in the courtroom begging for leniency in quantum of punishment. The prosecuting CBI counsel argued for the maximum jail term under the law for the convict whereas the Defence counsel sought leniency citing his social welfare activities.
The CBI court had convicted Dera chief on August 25 on rape charges. The convict was accused of rape of sadhvis at his Dera at Sirsa, Haryana. The CBI had started investigation into this high profile case on the basis of an anonymous complaint made to the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 2002.
