79.92 percent voting in by-poll of ward number-17 in Jagraon, Payal’s ward-5 registers 82.30 voting
Ludhiana, February 24,2018:
Ludhiana recorded 59.08 percent voter turnout in the Municipal Corporation Elections with the electorate exercised their franchise till 4pm.
Now, the fate of 494 candidates, who were in the fray for Ludhiana Municipal Corporation Elections, is sealed in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The counting of votes would be held on February 27.
Around 59.70 percent male, 57.66 percent women and 4.17 third genders casted their votes in Civic polls.
Meanwhile, for the by-polls of ward number-5 in Payal and ward number-17 in Jagraon Municipal Councils, 82.30 percent and 79.92 percent voter turnout was registered. BJP candidate Mr. Ankush Dhir defeated Congress candidate Mr. Madan Lal Bansal with 782 votes while in Payal, Congress candidate Mrs. Paramjeet Kaur defeated SAD candidate Mrs. Reena Rani with 214 votes.
A total of 754 nominations were filed for corporation elections and after scrutiny, six nomination papers of the candidates were rejected and one of the candidates from ward number-41 had filed nominations twice due to which 747 candidates remained in the contest and later, 253 persons withdrawn their candidatures.
The enthusiasm of voters including male and female was almost equal in all wards. Despite inclement weather in the morning, thousands of voters turned out in the morning to cast their votes.
Long queues were witnessed at most polling stations as voting began in all the wards at 8 a.m. Even many had reached the poll booths much before the exercise started.
Situation largely remained peaceful during the day barring stray incidents of arguments. As many as 4500 cops were deployed in the city to ensure a smooth free election.
In Municipal Corporation Ludhiana, around 10.50 lakh voters would cast their votes to elect their representatives from 95 wards out of which 5.67 are male, 4.82 lakh are female while 23 belong to the third gender.
