Ludhiana, Sept 22, 2018: Amid continuous heavy rain on Saturday, Municipal Commissioner, Ludhiana Kanwalpreet Kaur Brar inspected Community Toilets and Public Toilets (CT/PT) constructed in various parts of the city.
The MC Commissioner took along officials of the O&M Cell, Health Wing, B&R and Tehbazari Wing to the slums and other poor colonies of the city. These toilets have been constructed as part of the Open Defecation Free (ODF) scheme.
Besides inspection of the quality standards of these toilets, the Municipal Commissioner interacted with slum dwellers including a number of women and residents of other poor colonies to make best use of these toilets and avoid open defecation. She even spoke with kids to teach them about the benefits of these toilets.
“We are soon going to get Ludhiana declared ODF City. Given the dense population of the city especially in the poor localities and slums, the ODF scheme will go a long way in maintaining public hygiene in these areas. We will be paying special focus on creating awareness on the issue to make the ODF scheme a real success,” she told babushahi.com.
The maintenance of these toilets is the MC responsibility yet to promote community involvement, the area residents have been exhorted to come together to maintain these voluntarily in their respective areas.
Total 56 new gents and ladies toilets have been made available by the MC to the people in A, B and C Zone areas of the city besides mobile toilets in some other city areas. All the newly constructed toilets were in public use, informed Ashwini Sahota, Nodal Officer, Health Wing.
