Traffic marshal scheme launched in Ludhiana

Ludhiana Police has started the traffic marshal scheme with the aim to solicit Peoples’ participation in traffic regulation. The objectives of traffic marshal scheme are to promote peoples’ participation in regulation of Traffic with a view to ensure smooth movement of vehicular traffic and to inculcate road sense in motoring public and pedestrians.
Giving details of the scheme CP Ludhiana Rakesh Agrawal said that the Traffic Marshals will function purely as voluntary associates of Traffic Police Ludhiana. The Traffic Marshal will not be entitled to any salary, allowance, or payment in any form whatsoever, either in cash or kind for performing a role as a Traffic Marshal. Every Traffic Marshal shall be required to undergo a short course of training. Fixed duty hours and location shall be given as per the convenience of the Traffic Marshal. It is expected that a Traffic Marshal would work at least 6 hours per week. Persons of age of 16 years to 65 years can apply for appointment as traffic marshal. In case the age of Traffic Marshal is below 18 years then consent of one of his parent/guardian will be mandatory and such students will be deployed under close supervision of their school teachers near to their schools only.
Traffic Marshals will be give dummy challan books and they will have the powers to issue dummy challans, where there will be no monetary fines, but the traffic violator will be require to perform traffic duty for up to 8 hours as decided by traffic committee as mark of society service.
CP added that Application for appointment as Traffic Marshal has to be made online only on Mobile App of Traffic Marshal Ludhiana Police. This App can be downloaded from Google play store. Traffic marshals will be given ID cards and certificates. We are looking forward to enroll at least 2000 traffic marshal. They will be deployed in batches of 20 traffic marshals on each chowks, such that only 4-5 traffic marshals of the batch come every day by rotation. We will be covering 100 chwoks and other important traffic points gradually. We will be enrolling persons from 1st January to 20th January and then after training we will start deploying them. We appealed to the schools, NGOs , NCC Wing, Ex-Servicemen, Clubs and other organizations to come forward and be part of this initiative. The attendance of the traffic marshals will also be managed online and there will be no manual intervention so that their performance can be objectively monitored. We have also written to Municipal Corporation authority for proper Zebra Lines, Traffic Lights and other Traffic related sign boards.
A person enlisted as Traffic Marshal shall hold this post for a period of 2 years. If any traffic marshal is found to abuse his/her Official position, or any misconduct then he can be removed from the post. DCP Traffic will act as Nodal Officer for the scheme.
