World Bicycle Day - The theme for World Bicycle Day 2026 (observed annually on June 3) is "Cycling for a Greener Future".
Your average route to work might not resemble the one in today's image, but it shouldn't stop you from pedalling. World Bicycle Day invites us to rethink what's possible on two wheels—whether the ride cuts through city streets or remote terrain. Observed every 3 June, the United Nations–backed day recognises cycling as a practical way to move, supporting health, lowering emissions and making mobility more accessible.
An adventurer shown here cycles through Bardenas Reales Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve in Navarra, Spain, a stark landscape shaped by wind and water over millions of years. Its maze of eroded cliffs, plateaus and dry channels feels closer to another planet than northern Spain. Protected as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the park allows cycling on designated routes, offering a rare chance to experience a fragile environment at ground level and human speed.
From daily commutes to places like this, bicycles turn travel into exploration—quiet, efficient and surprisingly bold.
On the occasion of World Bicycle Day (June 3, 2026), I found myself reminiscing about the days when cycling was an integral part of my daily routine. Before the COVID era, I regularly enjoyed riding through the streets and roads of Ferozepur and on Sunday Ferozepur City to Hussainiwala Border upto Shaheed Bhagat Singh Martyrs Memorial, both for fitness and pleasure.
World Bicycle Day is celebrated globally to recognize the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable, and environmentally friendly means of transportation. It also highlights the important role cycling can play in promoting health, reducing pollution, and creating more sustainable communiti
However, with the increasing traffic on the roads, the absence of dedicated cycle tracks in a small city like Ferozepur, and concerns over incidents such as mobile snatching, I rarely venture out on a bicycle these days.
To stay fit and active, I now rely on exercise and yoga at home, which have proved to be a practical alternative.
Today, as I look back on those enjoyable cycling days, I am sharing an old photograph that brings back many fond memories.
