Punjab Da Siasi Taapmaan .....Tirchhi Nazar by Baljit Balli
Efforts Underway to Shape a New Narrative of a Two-Party Race
Tirchhi Nazar senses that some time ago, the Shiromani Akali Dal led by Sukhbir Singh Badal appeared to be emerging as the principal opposition force in Punjab. However, over the past few weeks, with an eye on the 2027 Assembly elections, a concerted effort seems underway to create a new political narrative: that the real contest in Punjab is between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Who exactly is playing what role in shaping this narrative—knowingly or unknowingly, directly or indirectly—is difficult to say at this stage. In politics, the visible events often tell only part of the story; what may be happening behind the scenes remains unknown.
Still, it is important to note a series of recent developments that appear to be reinforcing this emerging narrative.
Some Key Developments
Raids by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the defection of seven Rajya Sabha MPs to the BJP.
The special session of the Punjab Assembly on the anti-sacrilege legislation, followed by the Governor of Punjab giving his approval with surprising speed.
The BJP’s mock session.
IED blasts in Jalandhar and Amritsar.
A BJP delegation meeting the Governor and demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over what it described as a breakdown of law and order.
Bhagwant Mann’s explosive allegation that the BJP was behind the blasts as part of a larger conspiracy.
BJP leaders appearing before the Director General of Police and offering themselves for arrest.
The arrest of Punjab Minister Sanjeev Arora and subsequent protests by AAP outside BJP offices.
Incidents involving a former Akali leader who later became an AAP MLA, including a confrontation with a BJP district president.
Bhagwant Mann’s explosive allegation that the BJP was behind the blasts as part of a larger conspiracy added a dramatic new dimension to an already surcharged political atmosphere. While the charge, if believed, strikes at the BJP’s carefully cultivated image as a party committed to peace and nationalism, it also reshaped the state’s political discourse and gave the BJP a major opportunity to be aggressive in a bid to redefine the narrative.
And now, the arrest of Sanjeev Arora has added fuel to the fire.
A Political Climate That Keeps Changing
Punjab’s political temperature, much like the weather, changes rapidly. Predicting how intense—or how subdued—it will become in the months ahead is far from easy.
What is clear, however, is that efforts are underway to recast Punjab’s political landscape into a direct BJP-versus-AAP contest ahead of 2027. Whether this narrative takes root or is overtaken by new developments remains to be seen.
