Chandigarh, August 23, 2026: Punjab Rural Development and Panchayats Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond on Saturday said that 36,792 houses have been sanctioned in the state under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) since 2024-25, with 17,000 houses already completed.
Sond said the Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, was working to ensure that economically weaker families living in rural areas and those residing in kutcha houses get access to safe and dignified housing.
According to the Minister, the completed houses have been constructed with financial assistance of around Rs 478.45 crore, while work on the remaining 19,792 sanctioned houses is currently underway.
He said the government’s objective was not limited to constructing houses but also to provide rural families with a secure and dignified living environment.
Sond also highlighted a special housing package announced for families whose homes were damaged in the floods in Punjab. Under the Rs 360-crore package, 30,000 damaged houses were targeted for reconstruction and repairs.
So far, 28,020 houses have been sanctioned under the flood-related housing assistance, the Minister said, adding that the first and second instalments of financial assistance had already been transferred to the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries.
Sond said the ongoing housing initiatives were aimed at bringing a qualitative improvement in the lives of rural families and ensuring that no eligible beneficiary was deprived of government assistance due to financial constraints.
The impact of the housing scheme was also reflected in the experience of beneficiaries such as Pritam Singh of Machrai Kalan village in Fatehgarh Sahib district.
Pritam Singh said his family had earlier been living in a kutcha house where rainwater would frequently enter the premises. The poor condition of the walls and roof had also made it difficult for the family to live there safely.
He said the financial assistance provided under the government’s housing scheme enabled his family to construct a pucca house, providing them with greater security and relief.
Sond reiterated that the state government would continue its efforts to ensure that deserving rural families receive the benefits of housing schemes and have access to safe and permanent homes.
