Chandigarh, May 5, 2025: A special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha today witnessed a strong demand from the Opposition to address long-standing water rights concerns.
Five MLAs from three different opposition parties jointly called for a resolution to repeal the Dam Safety Act and Sections 78, 79, and 80 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, currently in force in the state.
The MLAs who raised the demand include:
- Pargat Singh (Congress)
- Sukhpal Singh Khaira (Congress)
- Manpreet Singh Ayali (Shiromani Akali Dal)
- Sukhwinder Singh Kotli (Congress)
- Dr. Nachhatar Pal (Bahujan Samaj Party)
The opposition legislators argued that these provisions unfairly impact Punjab’s control over its river waters and demanded the state assert its rights more firmly in water-sharing disputes.
