Chandigarh, July 11, 2025 –In a significant step towards strengthening higher education in Punjab, the Vidhan Sabha on Friday unanimously passed two key bills granting university status to Rayat Bahra and CGC Jhanjeri institutions.
The Rayat Bahra Professional University, Hoshiarpur Bill, 2025 and the CGC Jhanjeri University, Mohali Bill, 2025 were tabled earlier in the day by Higher Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains. Both bills received full support from all members across party lines and were passed without any opposition.
With the passage of these bills, Rayat Bahra in Hoshiarpur and CGC Jhanjeri in Mohali will now function as officially recognized private universities in the state.
The decision to introduce and pass these bills was taken in the recently held Punjab Cabinet meeting, reflecting the state government’s focus on expanding academic infrastructure and increasing access to quality higher education.
