Ludhiana (Punjab), August 22, 2025: Punjab has lost a towering personality in Dr. Jaswinder Singh Bhalla, a rare figure who seamlessly blended intellect with art, education with entertainment, and humor with social reform. Born on May 4, 1960, Dr. Bhalla will forever be remembered for his unparalleled contributions to both academia and Punjabi culture.
An alumnus of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, Dr. Bhalla completed his B.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Agricultural Extension before joining the institution as Assistant Professor in 1989. Rising to become Professor-cum-Head, Department of Extension Education in 2015, he retired in May 2020 after more than three decades of distinguished service.
“During his tenure, he pioneered innovative communication tools—audio cassettes, visual campaigns, and creative outreach—that made agricultural knowledge engaging and accessible for farmers and rural youth. Beyond the classroom, Dr. Bhalla became a household name through Punjabi cinema and stage. His sharp wit, relatable humor, and ability to highlight social realities won him love and respect across generations. For Punjabis worldwide, he was not just an entertainer but a cultural icon who carried the essence of Punjab’s spirit,” stated PAU, remembering Dr. Jaswinder Singh Bhalla.
Equally committed to social causes, he played a vital role as Brand Ambassador of the Swachh Bharat Mission, leading awareness campaigns on cleanliness, health, and drug abuse prevention. His dedication reflected his deep-rooted love for Punjab and its people.
The passing of Dr. Bhalla is being mourned as an irreparable loss to PAU, the Punjabi film industry, and the global Punjabi community. He leaves behind a rich legacy that will live on in PAU’s classrooms, in the fields he inspired farmers to cultivate, and in the laughter that continues to echo through his timeless performances.
May his noble soul rest in peace, and may his memory continue to inspire generations to come.
