KMSC stages 2-hr Rail Roko in Ferozepur against Electricity Amendment Bill
Ferozepur, December 5, 2025: Tension escalated in Ferozepur on Friday as the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) proceeded with its two-hour rail roko protest demanding the withdrawal of the draft Electricity Amendment Bill, 2025. Hours before the protest, Punjab Police conducted raids at the residences of several farmer union leaders and detained many of them, drawing sharp criticism from the organisation.
Gurmail Singh Fattewala, District Secretary of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, Ferozepur Unit, said that despite police pressure and early-morning raids, a large number of farmers and labourers gathered at Tankan Wali Basti as per the announced schedule. He alleged that even the state president was manhandled by the police and that senior farmers were disrespected. Condemning the action of the government, he demanded a clear and firm stand from Punjab on the proposed Electricity Amendment Bill. He said the land-related rights secured by elders for generations must not be handed over to private entities, and the Centre must be categorically informed of Punjab’s opposition.
Farmer leaders Sarwan Singh Pandher and Manjit Singh Rai announced that the agitation will intensify in the coming weeks. The upcoming protest schedule includes: • December 10: Protest against prepaid smart meters, December 17–18: Sit-in demonstrations outside all DC offices, and December 19: Full-scale Rail Roko if demands remain unmet.
The leaders said these steps were necessary as the core issues affecting farmers and the general public in Punjab were being ignored. They warned that if the government fails to respond in time, the agitation will be further intensified.
They added that while the government is seeking votes for elections, it is simultaneously using pressure tactics against farmers, labourers and ordinary citizens who are opposing the Centre’s move to privatise key public sector institutions.
