Indian Railways adds 116 coaches, runs special trains to tackle surge after flight cancellations

Chandigarh, December 6, 2025: Indian Railways has undertaken large-scale capacity augmentation across multiple zones to manage the sharp rise in passenger demand following widespread flight cancellations. A total of 37 trains have been strengthened with 116 additional coaches, covering 114 augmented trips nationwide, Minister of State Ravneet Bittu informed.
Southern Railway leads with enhancements in 18 trains, deploying extra Chair Car and Sleeper coaches from 6 December to meet rising demand. Northern Railway has increased capacity on eight trains by adding 3AC and Chair Car coaches.
Western Railway has augmented four major trains with 2AC and 3AC coaches, ensuring better connectivity between Mumbai, Gujarat, and Delhi. East Central Railway has added 2AC coaches to the Rajendra Nagar–New Delhi service over five trips from 6–10 December, benefiting Bihar–Delhi travellers.
East Coast Railway has boosted Bhubaneswar–New Delhi services with additional 2AC coaches over five trips, while Eastern Railway has added Sleeper coaches on six trips on 7–8 December. Northeast Frontier Railway has augmented two key trains with 3AC and Sleeper coaches over eight trips each, strengthening Northeast connectivity.
To further support travel demand, Railways is operating four special trains, including the Gorakhpur–Anand Vihar Special, New Delhi–Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan Vande Bharat Special, New Delhi–Mumbai Central Reserved Superfast Special, and the Hazrat Nizamuddin–Thiruvananthapuram Central Superfast Special.
