Chandigarh, January 5, 2026: Punjab Governor and Administrator of Chandigarh Gulab Chand Kataria on Saturday inspected night shelter facilities across the city to review arrangements made for the homeless and needy in view of the prevailing cold conditions.
The Administrator visited night shelters at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 32; GMSH, Sector 16; PGIMER, Sector 12; and the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT), Sector 17. During the visit, he assessed the availability of basic amenities, including bedding, blankets, drinking water, lighting, sanitation facilities, and overall cleanliness.

Kataria directed the Chandigarh Administration and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) to ensure the timely distribution of blankets to homeless and needy persons facing harsh winter conditions. He also interacted with officials deployed at the shelters and stressed the importance of ensuring dignity, safety, and comfort for all individuals availing these facilities.
Emphasising that the welfare of the most vulnerable sections of society remains a top priority, the Administrator called for regular monitoring of shelter occupancy and maintenance. He also underscored the need for coordinated efforts among civic bodies, health institutions, and social organisations to ensure that no one is left unprotected during extreme weather.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has set up temporary, waterproof night shelters at several locations across the city.
These shelters are equipped with essential facilities such as cushioned carpets, quilts, mattresses, pillows, blankets, electricity connections, drinking water, toilet facilities, and fire safety arrangements to provide relief to the homeless during the winter season.
