Loco Pilots maintain high vigilance for safe train operations amid dense fog
Ferozepur, January 23, 2026: In the ongoing winter season characterized by thick fog and reduced visibility, the Firozpur Division of Northern Railway is prioritizing passenger safety and uninterrupted train services. Loco pilots, train managers (guards), and station staff are exercising utmost caution to ensure smooth and secure rail operations despite the challenging foggy conditions.
To counter the limited visibility of signals during dense fog, loco pilots are carefully regulating train speeds, proceeding at controlled paces to maintain safety. The Railways have equipped locomotives with Fog Pass Devices with advanced - GPS-based tools that provide loco pilots with accurate real-time information on approaching signals, helping them navigate safely through low-visibility areas.
Additionally, every train’s last coach is fitted with a prominent red tail lamp, serving as a clear warning to any following trains and preventing potential rear-end collisions.
Visibility enhancements have been implemented across the network: luminous paint and reflective strips adorn stations, level crossing gates, and signal posts, ensuring these critical markers remain clearly visible even in poor weather. Operating staff at all stations have received strict instructions to remain extra vigilant, stay informed about signal positions in advance, and regularly update the control room.
Divisional officials are conducting continuous footplate inspections to monitor adherence to safety protocols on the ground.
Indian Railways remains fully committed to passenger safety during the winter fog season, relying on alert human resources, modern technology, and robust operational systems. Strict compliance with all safety regulations is being enforced across the division.
Divisional Railway Manager Sanjeev Kumar emphasised that passenger and train safety is the topmost priority during the cold weather. “All employees of Firozpur Division are making every possible effort to ensure safe and secure train operations,” he stated, underscoring the collective dedication to maintaining reliable services even in adverse foggy conditions.
