Chandigarh, February 2, 2026: The statement made by Dera Beas chief Baba Gurinder Singh Dhillon in support of senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia has triggered fresh political reactions in Punjab. Shiromani Akali Dal spokesperson Bunty Romana strongly endorsed the Dera chief’s remarks, stating that they were “100 per cent true.”
Expressing gratitude to Baba Gurinder Singh Dhillon, Romana said that the Dera chief’s statement had reaffirmed what the Akali Dal had been asserting for a long time. She alleged that the action against Majithia was driven by political vendetta.
Questioning the legal basis of the case, Romana pointed out that the FIR registered in connection with drug-related allegations did not indicate any recovery of narcotics. She further said that although the case was registered nearly five years ago during the Charanjit Singh Channi-led government, the challan has yet to be presented in court, which, according to her, reflects a lack of evidence.
Romana also recalled that Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal had earlier issued a written apology in connection with the same matter. She alleged that Majithia was being targeted for raising public issues and questioning the government, and that his incarceration was aimed at “silencing” his voice.
The Akali Dal spokesperson further said that Baba Gurinder Singh Dhillon’s remarks echoed the sentiments of crores of people.
Meanwhile, the issue has sharpened political confrontation, with AAP leader Neil Garg terming the Dera chief’s statement as inappropriate, while Romana defended it as an expression of truth. The contrasting reactions indicate that the controversy is likely to further intensify Punjab’s political discourse in the coming days.
