Majithia’s bail is legal relief, not acquittal: Minister Harpal Cheema

Chandigarh, February 2, 2026:Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Monday clarified that the bail granted by the Supreme Court to former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia should not be misconstrued as an acquittal, stating that the legal proceedings in the case are still ongoing.
Reacting to the Supreme Court’s decision, Cheema said that while the Shiromani Akali Dal is portraying the bail as a major victory, it merely provides temporary legal relief and does not amount to a clean chit. “Getting bail does not mean that Majithia has been acquitted. The case is still under trial, and the investigating agencies have strong evidence,” he told mediapersons.
Majithia was booked in a case related to disproportionate assets and had been lodged in Nabha Jail for the past seven months before the apex court ordered his release on bail.
Targeting the Akali Dal, Cheema said it was misleading to project bail as a certificate of innocence when investigations are still underway. He stressed that the matter remains before the court and will be decided strictly on the basis of evidence and due legal process.
