Chandigarh, February 9, 2026:The atmosphere in Chandigarh turned tense on Monday after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ministers and workers attempted to march towards the residence of Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, leading to a confrontation with the police.
Anticipating the protest, Chandigarh Police had erected barricades well ahead of Bajwa’s house. As AAP workers tried to break through the barricades and move forward, police intervened to stop the march. This resulted in pushing, shoving and heated exchanges between protesters and police personnel.
To control the situation, police used water cannons and also resorted to a mild lathi-charge, forcing several workers to retreat. The protest witnessed sharp arguments between senior party leaders and police officers, with AAP leaders accusing the police of high-handedness. The police, however, maintained that the march could not be permitted due to security concerns.
The protest was led by senior AAP leaders and cabinet ministers Harbhajan Singh ETO, Dr Balbir Singh, Mahendra Bhagat, Harpal Singh Cheema, Sunny Aluwalia and Dr Ravjot Singh, along with several other party leaders and thousands of workers.
