Chandigarh, February 26, 2026: Punjab Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Baljit Kaur has expressed serious concern over multiple instances of obscene and derogatory portrayal of women in advertisements, asserting that the Punjab Government will not tolerate any violation of women’s dignity and honour.
Addressing the issue, the Minister stated that several objectionable advertisements have come to the notice of the department and reminded that the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986 strictly prohibits any indecent or derogatory depiction of women. She emphasized that portraying women in an obscene manner through advertisements, publications, paintings, or any media platform constitutes a punishable offence under law, and strict legal action will be taken against violators.
Dr. Baljit Kaur underlined that safeguarding the dignity, honour and safety of women remains one of the foremost priorities of the Punjab Government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. She warned that any violation of the law in this regard would invite stringent action as per prescribed legal provisions.
Issuing clear directions to media platforms, the Minister instructed all TV channels, websites, web-based applications, newspapers and audio-visual media outlets to ensure that no content or advertisement depicting women in an obscene or derogatory manner is broadcast or published.
She cautioned that individuals or organizations involved in disseminating such content would face strict legal consequences. The Minister further directed all District Programme Officers across Punjab to take suo motu cognizance of such cases and ensure prompt action on complaints, with periodic reviews at both district and state levels by Deputy Commissioners.
She also informed that instructions have been issued to all Senior Superintendents of Police to provide necessary support for effective enforcement of the law.
Reiterating the government’s commitment, Dr. Baljit Kaur described the move as a significant step towards building a safe, respectful and dignified society for women in Punjab.
