Chandigarh, February 26, 2026: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab on Wednesday strongly rebutted BJP leader Ashwani Sharma over his claim that only the BJP can eradicate drugs and restore law and order in the state, asserting that such statements insult the intelligence and memory of the people of Punjab.
AAP Punjab General Secretary and Media In-charge Baltej Pannu, in a video message, reminded Sharma that the BJP was in alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) from 1997 to 2002 and again from 2007 to 2017, during which Punjab was governed by the SAD-BJP combine.
He alleged that it was during this period that drugs spread rapidly across the state and “chitta” devastated an entire generation.
Pannu asserted that responsibility for the drug crisis does not rest with the Badals alone but that the BJP shares equal accountability for the situation. He questioned whether BJP leaders believe that Punjabis have forgotten the decade marked by rising drug abuse and gangsterism under their governance, urging them to reflect on their own record before making claims.
The AAP leader further stated that the government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is currently taking sincere and comprehensive action against drug networks and gangsterism.
He claimed that the Mann government is working to dismantle drug supply chains and restore peace and law and order in Punjab, while cleaning up what he described as the “legacy of previous regimes.”
