Gurdaspur (Punjab), March 4, 2026: Tension continues to escalate in Gurdaspur following the alleged police encounter killing of Ranjit Singh, as his family and supporting organisations have refused to perform the last rites, intensifying pressure on the administration.
Family members, along with villagers and an action committee comprising religious, social and farmers’ groups, have declared that the cremation will not take place until their demands are met. The committee has called for an independent investigation into the encounter, insisting that the probe be handed over either to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or conducted under the supervision of a sitting High Court judge.
The action committee has further demanded strict legal action against the police officials and personnel allegedly involved in the encounter. Leaders of the committee have questioned the circumstances surrounding the police action, stating that they are determined to secure justice and will not back down from their agitation.
In a major escalation, the committee announced that it will stage a massive protest and gherao the District Administrative Complex (DC Office) in Gurdaspur on March 9. The protest is expected to draw significant participation from various organisations backing the family.
Following the postmortem report, the family has decided to intensify its agitation, asserting that they will continue their struggle until a fair and transparent inquiry is ensured.
