Alert Jail staff recover 8 mobile from 7 undertrial prisoners in Ferozepur Central Jail
Ferozepur, May 9, 2026: The vigilant staff of Ferozepur Central Jail foiled an alleged illegal communication network inside the prison after recovering eight mobile phones from seven undertrial prisoners lodged in the jail.
According to official information, the recovered items included six touchscreen mobile phones and two keypad phones. Following the recovery, a case has been registered under the provisions of the Prisons Act. Sukhdev Singh has been assigned to investigate the matter further.
Sources said that during the current year alone, jail authorities have recovered 169 mobile phones from inmates, including the latest seizure of eight devices. Officials believe that contraband items are often smuggled into prisons through various methods, including throwing packets over boundary walls, concealing them in clothing or body cavities during family visits or parole returns, and by exploiting security loopholes at checkpoints.
Data related to recoveries over recent years indicates a sharp rise in the number of mobile phones seized from prisons. While 70 mobile phones were recovered in 2019, the figure increased to 130 in 2020, 265 in 2021, 437 in 2022, 469 in 2023, 500 in 2024, and 649 in 2025, highlighting the growing challenge faced by prison authorities.
Authorities stated that the increasing use of modern surveillance systems and advanced security technologies is expected to help curb the growing menace of mobile phone smuggling inside prisons. Police officials are also reportedly adopting a cautious approach during investigations and generally avoiding police remand of prisoners due to security concerns, except in sensitive or high-profile cases.
