Punjab announces elections for 105 Municipal bodies; Voting on May 26

Chandigarh, May 11, 2026: The Punjab State Election Commission has announced the schedule for elections to 105 urban local bodies across Punjab, including Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats.
According to the notification issued by the Punjab Government’s Local Government Department, elections will be held for 8 Municipal Corporations, 76 Municipal Councils and 21 Nagar Panchayats in the state.
The process for filing nomination papers by candidates will begin on May 13 and continue till May 16 between 11 am and 3 pm at the offices of the concerned Returning Officers.
Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on May 18, while candidates can withdraw their nominations till 3 pm on May 19.
Polling will be held on May 26 from 8 am to 5 pm, and counting of votes will take place on May 29 at designated counting centres.
The Election Commission said a total of 36,72,932 voters are eligible to cast their votes in these elections. This includes 18,98,990 male voters, 17,73,716 female voters and 226 voters from the third gender category.
To conduct the elections, 3,977 polling stations have been set up across Punjab.
The Commission has also fixed election expenditure limits for candidates. Candidates contesting Municipal Corporation elections can spend up to Rs 4 lakh, while limits for Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats vary according to category.
Around 36,000 election staff and 35,500 police personnel will be deployed for election duty across the state. IAS and PCS officers will also be appointed as observers in every district to monitor the polling process.
The Election Commission said all arrangements have been made to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections.
With the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect in all areas where elections are scheduled and will remain in force until the completion of the election process.
