Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), May 20, 2026 — Himachal Pradesh is witnessing an intense heatwave after three consecutive days of strong sunshine pushed temperatures sharply upward across the state, including usually cooler hill destinations like Shimla and Manali.
According to the Meteorological Department, several districts experienced heatwave-like conditions on Tuesday, with residents in Kangra, Kullu, Solan and even parts of Kinnaur facing extreme afternoon heat. Officials said Kinnaur witnessed heatwave conditions for the first time this summer season.
The state’s hottest temperature was recorded in Una, where the mercury soared to 43.4 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest day of the season so far in Himachal Pradesh.
Even in Shimla, known for its pleasant weather, people experienced uncomfortable heat and humidity throughout the day. Though clouds appeared intermittently in the capital city, they brought little relief from the rising temperatures.
The weather department stated that temperatures in many parts of the state were recorded 3 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal. It has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions in parts of Kangra and Solan districts for May 20 and 21.
Officials said at least 11 cities across Himachal Pradesh recorded maximum temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius or above during the past 24 hours, making outdoor movement difficult in several low-lying areas.
Meanwhile, due to an approaching western disturbance, the weather department has also issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds in Chamba, Kangra and Kullu districts on May 21. Wind speeds during this period could reach 40 to 50 kilometres per hour.
