DC reviews In-Situ and Ex-Situ paddy straw management activities in villages
Ferozepur, October 31, 2026: To review the ongoing efforts to prevent paddy stubble burning and ensure effective crop residue management in the district, Deputy Commissioner Ferozepur Deepashikha Sharma, accompanied by Senior Superintendent of Police Bhupinder Singh and Chief Agriculture Officer Balwinder Singh, visited several villages.
The officers visited Chak Somian, Kohar Singh Wala, Chak Jamit Singh Wala and Chugga, where they reviewed both in-situ and ex-situ paddy straw management practices and interacted with farmers to assess the adoption of scientific alternatives to stubble burning.
At village Chugga, progressive farmers Satwinder Singh Brar and Harmanjit Singh Brar have sown wheat over nearly 65 acres using a mulcher and plough for paddy residue management. Their initiative reflects the adoption of sustainable farming practices aimed at improving soil health, reducing cultivation costs and lowering fertiliser consumption.
At Chak Somian, the officers interacted with farmers Gurwinder Singh, Tek Singh, Jharmal Singh and Sukh Darshan Singh and encouraged them to adopt scientific crop residue management methods to prevent stubble burning and maintain soil fertility.
As part of the review of ex-situ management, Sharma also inspected a paddy straw storage dump owned by Kuldeep Singh Bharwa at Chak Somian. Around 1,350 metric tonnes of paddy straw have been stored at the facility so far. Such facilities facilitate the collection, transportation and storage of paddy straw for its further utilisation for industrial and other productive purposes.
DC stressed the need to strengthen both in-situ and ex-situ management of paddy residue. While in-situ management involves incorporating or managing residue within fields, ex-situ management involves its collection, transportation, storage and utilisation outside the fields.
The district administration appealed to farmers to refrain from burning paddy straw and make maximum use of available crop residue management machinery and alternative practices. Farmers were also urged to cooperate with the Agriculture Department and district administration for effective implementation of the stubble management programme.
The administration reiterated its commitment to promoting sustainable agricultural practices and preventing stubble burning across Ferozepur district.
