Ferozepur, April 14: The 16th Lok Sabha elections are being held in India and each political party -national, state or regional – is playing its own music across the country. India is the seventh largest by area and the second most populous country in the world, with roughly one-sixth of its population, of about a billion and a quarter. It is the world\'s largest democracy. It is one of the world\'s oldest civilizations yet, a very young nation. While the Punjab goes to the polls on in 13 Lok Sabha constituencies and polling would take place in the third phase on April 30. This time, the Election Commission could not tune with the time as the rural area people would be busy in harvesting season because of delay in harvesting due to untimely rains and cloudy season. The most interesting feature of the election this time would the first-time participation of teenage voters who are either 18 or just crossed 18 and they are likely to play a decisive role in the Lok Sabha elections in Punjab as they constitute 50 per cent of the electorate. They account for about 98 lakhs among the total 1.92 crore voters. In fact, about 8 lakh new voters in this segment would be lining up for polling booths in Punjab, adding new dimension to the electoral exercise. Total Punjab Voters: Male 1,01,12873 Female 90,94,357 Total 1,92,07,230 Number of Voters in Ferozepur : Male 7,96,156 Female 7,02,480 Total 14,98,636 Age Group 18-19 41,980 20-29 3,90,680 30-39 3,69,721 80 and above 23,718 This constituency comprises the Assembly segments of Ferozepur City, Ferozepur Rural, Guruharsahai, Jalalabad, Fazilka, Abohar, Balluana, Malout and Muktsar. The border city of Ferozepur is famous for the National Martyr’s Memorial, located a kilometer away from the Indo-Pak border. It was built nin 1968 on the banks of Satluj as a tribute to revolutionaries – Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru, where they are stealthily cremated. Ferozepur is also famous for the Saragarhi Memorial Gurdwara which was built to commemorate the battle of 1897. It was built by the Army in the honour of, 21 Sikh soldiers of the 36 Sikh Regiment, who sacrificed their lives fighting against 10,000 Pathans while protecting Fort Saragarhi in Wazirstan. The Anglo-Sikh War Memorial, at Ferozshah is also being restored at a cost of Rs.18 lakh. The Abohar Wildlife Sanctuary is another attraction in the region, which will be developed at a cost of Rs.33 lakhs in the near future. The sanctuary consisting of 13 revenue villages is inhabited by the Bishnoi community. The Black Buck Deer are found in plenty and freely roam even in domestic neighborhood. The other attraction is Harike Bird Sanctuary which is yet to be developed for which Rs.76 lakh has been sanctioned. The cast factor has always played a key role in determining the outcome of any electoral battle in this border constituency which shares a 200 km border with Pakistan out of the total 553 km in Punjab. Several projects such as setting up of a PGI Satellite Centre besides a domestic airport have been announced, but nothing has been done on the ground. No doubt, after independence, Ferozepur has developed from education point of view with coming up of polytechnic, dental college, engineering college and recently announcement of government college but since 1971, when the Indo-Pak border was opened for trade through Hussainiwala, there have been no development, so far as setting up of Industrial Units are concerned as people are reluctant to make investments in Ferozepur because of border town. Geographcally it has been reduced with the bifurcation of Ferozepur District with new districts like Moga, FazIlka, Muktsar, Faridkot. In the past, the MPs elected at glance are : 2009,Sher Singh Ghubaya SAD, and runner up candidate Jagmeet Singh Brar of Congress 2004,Zora Singh Maan SAD, and runner up candidate Jagmeet Singh Brar of Congres 1999,Zora Singh Maan,SAD, and runner up candidate Hans Raj Jossan Congress 1998,Zora Singh Maan,SAD and runner up candidate Mohan Singh Phalianwala BSP In the last four elections Shiromani Akali Dal has dominated Ferozepur Parliamentary Constituency and in the instant elections, only the polls results would decide. Go on guessing!
