HS Mann SSP Fzr holding press conference
Chandigarh, April 14, 2015: SAD-BJP alliance in Punjab once again proved its mettle by winning Dhuri Assembly By-Poll held on April 11, 2015. The SAD Candidate Gobind Singh Longowal bagged this prestigious seat with huge margin of 37,501over his nearest rival Simarpartap Singh Barnala. In all, there were 12 candidates in the fray and the real direct contest was with Congress Candidate Simarpartap Singh Barnala grandson of Former Governor and Punjab Ex-CM Surjit Singh Barnala. The Aam Aadmi Party abstained from contesting this by-election. SAD Amritsar led by Simranjeet Singh Mann’s candidate Surjit Singh Kalbula was also a candidate in the election battle. The By-poll was necessitated due to the resignation of Congress MLA Arvind Khanna who was known for close confidante of Captain Amarinder Singh. SAD-BJP candidate Gobind Singh Longowal had established the lead from the very first round with a margin of 4067 and followed by margin of 8078 votes in the second round. Leaders of both the parties including SAD-BJP alliance and Congress took part in the campaign. The SAD supremo and patron Parkash Singh Badal, President SAD and Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal and other senior leaders like Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Balwinder Singh Bhunder also campaigned aggressively in this Malwa belt seat. The Congress, being a divided house could not make much in the election campaign process as its senior leaders Captain Amarinder Singh and Partap Singh Bajwa had been busy in personal feuds with allegations and counter allegations against each other thus demoralizing the lower cadre party ranks. The Congress Party therefore suffered a big jolt as there were no proper co-ordination in the state leadership and also no supportive directions from the Delhi High Command because of absence of its Vice President Rahul Gandhi and lack of interest by Sonia Gandhi. Though, the Central leaders like Shakeel Ahmed made a brief visits during elections but with no clear ideological policies to impress the voters during Dhuri By-poll. The absence of Aam Aadmi Party in the election scene in Dhuri By-Poll paved the smooth way of the Shiromani Akali Dal- BJP Candidate to establish victory in this by-poll. With the winning of SAD candidate, there is a boost in the morale of the party cadres as it has got full majority in the Punjab Assembly by achieving magic figure of 59 as it was short of one seat in the assembly. The SAD now will have an upper hand as there will be no dependence on BJP in taking independent decisions and ensuring the smooth passing of legislative proposals in the assembly with the support of its own members. The victory by the SAD candidate in Dhuri By-poll has once again stamped Sukhbir Badal as a successful election strategist in the political scene. Political observers feel that he has been able to erode the base of BJP in urban and semi-urban areas by winning the hearts of urban voters. It will certainly impact the political scenario in the coming 2017 State Assembly Elections. The Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal and senior leaders Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Balwinder Singh Bhunder expressed their gratitude to the voters of Dhuri constituency for reposing faith in the policies of the SAD-BJP Govt.
