The three P’s: Power, Politics, and People
Every individual is born with a different set of traits and a different set of abilities and capabilities. Another important aspect to note here is the talent and efficiency of any individual to utilize his or her set of traits in a way to move masses, in other words, to set a trend in the society to follow. History witnesses, there had been leaders and kings in the world over who gave us an interesting historical background to look upon and build upon. It is very important to observe something tragic or bad because then only we can realize the importance of good.
As human society started developing, the important element that took shape and caused a lot of effect on the daily life of people was, ‘the power’. Few among the people could visualize things and events more clearly than others and played a major role in deciding the course of events that took place in the past. Conquering of states, battles that were fought, trade that was practiced made few, among many, the leaders. Few names to mention here are, Adolf Hitler, Genghis Khan, Akbar, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, these rulers made a big impact on the history of the world. All of them were defined as ‘powerful’ because power was defined in terms of conquering and defeating the army in front and owning the natural wealth of the territory.
Slowly, as education started pouring into society and people started getting educated and more aware of things and the ways, a society functions, people got into politics.
What is politics? Politics may be defined as the art of managing people of a state or country through some groups of people those who share a common viewpoint for the welfare of the society and these viewpoints can be related to different aspects of the society like social and economic aspect. The academic study of Politics is called Political Science. It is called science because present-day politics is the result of all the politics and the practices of the formers political parties and groups and present-day parties work on the base of those proven facts by making some amendments as and when required.
Then come the people of a state or a country, who should benefit from these so-called, powerful people and the efficient politicians as the people or the common masses are at the receiving end and chose their representatives so that they can be heard and get solutions to their problems in a systematic manner. But is this the reality? Above all this, we have a democratic system, but sadly the very essence of democracy is fading these days. Democracy means freedom in terms of expression, freedom in terms of actions, freedom in terms of living, and decision making but is this freedom practiced wisely these days?
As was very beautifully expressed by one of the Sadhvi’s in ICSE 2019, International Conference of Sustainability Education, ‘you are free to move your arm or hand towards the person in front until and unless it hits the person’.
Certain values play a vital role when it comes to the smooth functioning of a system. These are ethics, sincerity, honesty, a healthy attitude, and a feeling of togetherness. But sadly, people are full of beauty, glamour, money, position, health but they are completely hollow in terms of values. Everyone is just trying to pull the other person down so that he or she can be the first as if this life is a race and somebody is standing at the finishing line to award the winner with all that is needed to be at the top. Just stop and think, where are we going? People are not using freedom as their right, they use freedom as a weapon to belittle someone, to harass someone, to showcase their position and have made strata for freedom as the people of high economic status are freer to do all the things and the people with low economic strata or less education are not that free to do things.
Freedom is freedom and it should not be categorized or its usage should not depend on the fulfillment of certain conditions but the only recommendation here is, the wise use of freedom. Express yourself for a cause, vocalize your concerns for the benefit of society as a whole, use your freedom to educate people, use your freedom to bring a change in the mindset of people, use your freedom to set an example for others to follow and all those at higher positions both politically and economically should use their freedom to lead their lives consciously and sensibly, so that we can make it together.
