Amritsar (Punjab), September 5, 2025: Anger spilled onto the streets of Amritsar on Friday as farmers staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office, demanding compensation for crops devastated by recent floods. The protest turned tense after a scuffle broke out between farmers and the police.
Farmers are demanding immediate relief of ₹70,000 per acre for their flood-affected crops. They argued that without urgent financial support, they cannot prepare for the next sowing season.
The demonstration came just a day after Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s visit to Punjab’s flood-hit areas, which had raised hopes among farmers for swift government action. However, in the absence of concrete assurances, their frustration has grown.
One of the protesting farmers said, “The floods have destroyed our hard work and investment. Without timely compensation, survival is impossible.”
The situation outside the DC office remains tense, with a heavy police presence deployed to maintain order.
