Breaking: Punjab sees rise in swine flu cases; Health Minister says no need to panic, situation fully under control

Chandigarh, August 25, 2026: Punjab has reported an increase in cases of swine flu (H1N1) in recent days alongside a rise in viral infections, but Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh has said there is no need for panic as the situation remains fully under control.
According to the Health Minister, the number of swine flu cases remained in single digits each month from January to July this year, with no month recording 10 or more cases. In contrast, around 70 cases have been reported so far in August.
Dr Balbir Singh said no new variant of the virus has been detected in the current cases. He described it as an existing and relatively mild variant and said no patient had so far developed a serious condition or required hospitalisation.
He said patients are being tested and, where necessary, provided medication before being advised to recover at home.
The Health Minister attributed the recent rise in viral infections partly to the rainy season, when increased humidity can contribute to the spread of viral illnesses. He added that several parts of the country, including Delhi, have also witnessed a rise in viral infections during this period.
Dr Balbir Singh said healthy individuals generally do not need to be particularly concerned. However, pregnant women, young children, elderly people and those suffering from serious conditions such as cancer or diabetes have been advised to avoid crowded places and wear masks when necessary.
He further said that government hospitals across Punjab have facilities for H1N1 testing, medicines and treatment.
The Health Minister urged people not to pay heed to rumours and encouraged residents to follow necessary precautions while continuing with their normal daily activities.
