Chandigarh, January 5, 2026: A special CBI court in Chandigarh on Monday granted default bail to suspended Punjab Police DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar in a case related to the alleged accumulation of assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
The court allowed the bail application after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to file the chargesheet within the mandatory 60-day statutory period, making the accused entitled to default bail under law.
Bhullar and his alleged accomplice Krishanu Sharda were arrested on October 16, 2025, for allegedly demanding a bribe from a scrap dealer in Mandi Gobindgarh. Subsequently, on October 29, 2025, the CBI registered a separate case against Bhullar under charges of possessing disproportionate assets.
During raids conducted as part of the investigation, the CBI claimed to have recovered large amounts of cash, gold and silver jewellery, expensive branded watches, along with documents related to multiple immovable properties from Bhullar’s premises.
However, despite being granted bail in the disproportionate assets case, Bhullar will remain in judicial custody, as his bail application in the primary bribery and corruption case was rejected by the court last week.
The court clarified that the grant of default bail was solely based on procedural grounds and does not amount to relief on the merits of the case.
