Italy suspends defence pact with Israel amid rising tensions
Babushahi Bureau
Rome (Italy), April 14, 2026: Giorgia Meloni has announced that Italy will halt the automatic renewal of its long-standing defence cooperation agreement with Israel, citing the current geopolitical situation.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event in Verona, Meloni said the government had decided to suspend the agreement, which covers collaboration in military equipment, technology research, training, and defence industry partnerships.
Diplomatic sources confirmed the move, indicating that continuing the pact under present circumstances would have been politically challenging.
The agreement, originally approved in 2006 and reviewed every five years, has been a key framework for bilateral defence cooperation, including research and development as well as information technology exchange.
