Chandigarh, January 31, 2026:
Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu has formally invited Rajya Sabha Member Rajinder Gupta to attend the inauguration of the new terminal building of Halwara Airport on February 1, 2026, an event to be graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The invitation assumes special significance as Rajinder Gupta had raised the urgency of operationalising Halwara Airport on the very first day of his tenure as a Rajya Sabha member, bringing national attention to the long-pending issue affecting Punjab’s industrial heartland.
In the official communication sent to Gupta, the Union Minister informed that Adampur Airport will be renamed as “Guru Ravidas Ji Airport, Adampur” on the same day. Alongside, the new terminal building at Halwara Airport, developed at a cost of ₹54.67 crore, will be inaugurated. The project is a joint venture between the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Punjab Government.
It is noteworthy that Rajinder Gupta consistently pursued both issues — the naming of Adampur Airport after Guru Ravidas Ji and the construction and operationalisation of Halwara Airport — in Parliament and with the Government of India.
Issue Raised on First Day in Rajya Sabha
Earlier, on December 1, 2025, during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Gupta had raised an urgent demand for the operationalisation of Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Kartar Singh Sarabha Airport at Halwara, Ludhiana, terming it critical for Punjab’s economic growth.
Highlighting Ludhiana’s economic importance, Gupta pointed out that the city contributes over ₹72,000 crore annually to India’s industrial output and is home to more than 1.5 lakh MSMEs, making it one of the largest industrial clusters in the country. He stressed that a functional airport at Halwara would act as a catalyst for industry, exports, employment, and regional development across the Malwa belt.
With the inauguration now scheduled, Gupta’s parliamentary intervention is widely seen as having accelerated long-delayed decisions, translating advocacy into tangible results.
