Ottawa/ Chandigarhpar, August 22, 2026: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has condemned the attack at the Nanaksar Gurdwara in Edmonton, where two people were injured during an incident on Friday morning.
In a statement posted on social media, Carney described the attack as “appalling” and expressed his thoughts for the two injured persons and the wider Sikh community affected by the incident.
“My thoughts are with the two people who were injured and the wider community that is shaken by this terrible event,” Carney said.
He stressed that no one should ever feel unsafe in their place of worship and thanked the Edmonton Police Service for its swift response.
The Prime Minister's remarks came a day after two men were stabbed during morning prayers at the Nanaksar Gurdwara in north Edmonton. Police arrested a suspect following the incident. Community representatives said the injured men were elderly members who had attempted to intervene during the disturbance.
The Edmonton Police Service has been investigating the incident, including whether it could have been motivated by hate. The motive had not been officially established at the time of the initial reports.
The attack has caused concern among Sikhs in Alberta, particularly amid reports of threatening calls made to Sikh places of worship in Calgary. The World Sikh Organization of Canada has also condemned the incident.
